Counting and summing based on 2 columns

Variations of this have been asked before, possibly the exact same thing but I'm still struggling to get this to work right -- please do feel free to point me to another post if this has been answered.

Given a spreadsheet with two (non-adjacent, though I don't think it matters) columns. Column A has names, or may be blank. Column B has an "X" in it, or may be blank.

I'd like a single number that counts the number of X marks for the UNIQUE set of names in Column A. Preferably without using a helper column because I'd like to drag the formula across another 11 columns of Xes.

Given this table:
A B
One X
Two X
Three
Four X
Two X
Three
One X
Four


The value I'd like at the bottom of the B column should be 3 (representing that One, Two, and Four have Xes).

Hmm... now that I've got this I realize I'm interested in another aspect. Introducing a new variable to the table:

A B C
One ALPHA X
Two ALPHA X
Three BETA
Four BETA X
Two ALPHA X
Three BETA
One BETA X
Four BETA


Now, I'm interested in the count of Xes for the unique tuples between column A and B. So... there'd be a count for ALPHA and a count for BETA. The correct count for ALPHA in this case is 2 (One ALPHA, Two ALPHA) and the count for BETA would be 2 (Four BETA, One Beta).

1) MATCH the range targeted for distinct count (here the A-range) against itself, however:
only those cells which are not empty or house a formula blank; and
only those cells that correponds to other cells for which a specified condition holds (here the B-range);

2) Map the output of matching into the bins specified with: ROW(...)-ROW(...)+1; All duplicates will be parsed into the same bin;

3) IF(FREQUENCY(...),1) yields a 1 for all non-zero bins.

4) SUM sums all those 1's so generated, composing the desired distinct count.

Progressive evaluation gives the following picture:

The inner IF bits for the exhibit you posted yields...

Put otherwise: Matching <FAD,FAD,LAD> against <FAD,FAD,LAD> yields the following positions: <1,1,3>. Mapped against the bins [1,2,3], we get the following frequency counts: 2,0,1. Mapping these frequencies into 1 for being 1 or >1, gives: 1, 0, 1 whose sum is 2.
