an old problem

excel 2007; W7

I'm using an input box to ask for a $value.
my code is:

ans = InputBox("How much is owed right now?", vbOKCancel)
If vbCancel = True Then
Exit Sub
End If
If ans <> "" Then
End If
If ans = "" Then
MsgBox "I need the current amount owed"
GoTo tryagain
Else: End If

ans = what is entered in the inputbox; however I want to exit the inputbox if I select the Cancel button instead of Ok.
I also want to test for a "" (Null) in the inputbox and tell me its empty and to try again.

My problem is that clicking on the cancel button does not exit the sub, but finds "" and asks me to try again (looping). How do I accomplish what I am trying to do?
P.S. my code is very amateurish, I know; I was trying basic coding in blocks to see where I'm going wrong

Only had a quick look at your code but this doesn't seem quite right.

Code:

If vbCancel = True Then

For one thing vbCancel is a VBA constant and also that If statement isn't testing the response, ans, to the message box.

How do I test for pressing the Cancel button or test that no entry was made so I can redirect for another try?

Here is a generalized structure you can use for the InputBox that will allow you to react to the user clicking the Cancel button or clicking Enter without filling in anything as well as when the user enters actual data...

Code:

 '....
 Answer = InputBox("Tell me something")
 If StrPtr(Answer) = 0 Then
   MsgBox "The user clicked Cancel, so we will exit the subroutine now."
   Exit Sub
 ElseIf Len(Answer) = 0 Then
   MsgBox "The user clicked OK without entering anything in the InputBox!"
 Else
   MsgBox "The user entered the following..." & vbLf & vbLf & Answer
 End If

Thank you Rick Rothstein. I will give it a try.
I noticed from other posts (on other boards) that this problem is quirky, because of the need to test for just the click of the cancel button as opposed to testing for no entry and clicking OK.
