Excel Facts

Repeat Last Command
Pressing F4 adds dollar signs when editing a formula. When not editing, F4 repeats last command.

Are the values you are trying to SUM formatted as Numbers or Text? If they are Left Justified, that is probably a sign that they are entered as Text and not Numeric.

i have numbers in the cells. made sure the format was numeric....even multiplied the cells by 1 to make sure they were numeric. but my result is still showing as 0

Are your calculations definitely switched to automatic?

yep, automatic.

if i list 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and at the 6 row use autosum the result is 0.
if i say =A1+A2+A3+A4+A5 and hit enter, the result is 0

If you remove all justification on the cells, are the numbers Left or Right justified?

What are the specific values in these cells?
They don't happen to add up to 0, do they (positives and negatives)?

If you use the function ISNUMBER on one of the cells, does it return TRUE?
i.e.
=ISNUMBER(A1)
