In MS EXcel 2003, I need a formula that could fill autonumber in column B depending on what is in column A. Notice that the numbering will go back to 1 if a new group is encountered.

For example...

Group autonumber
a 1
a 2
a 3
a 4
b 1
b 2
c 1
c 2
c 3

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Nick

Welcome to the board....

As long as the groups are sorted, and you won't come accross the same group later on down the sheet..

In B1 and filled down to end of data
=COUNTIF(A$1:A1,A1)

Hope that helps...
