cell b calcaulate the value of cell a HELP

When i type characters (letters) in a cell A i want cell B to calculate (number value) and show how many characters there are in cell A. How do i this I am running excel mac 2011

is there a way to lock the cell the formula is in. When i copy the cell i am editing the formula copies a formula to where i pasted to

Did you protect the worksheet? Cells are locked by default.
