copy the first 8 characters from one cell into the next cell using a formula?

I need to copy the first 8 characters from every row in one column into the cell in the next column using a formula in the cell, not a macro. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Try in B1

=LEFT(A1,8)

anfd copy down.
