Count appearance of name across range

I have searched through previous threads with minimal helpful results, so here goes:

I have a shift roster which I alter from week to week and would like to implement a formula that would keep track of the amount of times a name appears across the week.
Mon-thurs, fri-sun appear in same row with mon+fri, teus+sat, wed+sun sharing columns.
EG: A B C D
1 Mon, teus, wed, thurs
2 name, name, name, name
...
9 Fri, sat, sun
10 name, name, name
...

place =COUNTA(A1:A4) in col E and copy down

Having a hard time trying to visualize your setup and how it might relate to your question.

Does something like this do what you want?

F1 = some name to count

=COUNTIF(A2:D2,F1)
