# Count occurrences in a month

##### Board Regular
I have tried to look the answer but without success. What I need to do is the following.

First, I have a spreadsheet with names and dates when inmates are released.

On another sheet within the same workbook, I want to have a table with how many inmates were released in Jan, Feb, etc.

Can anyone help? Thank you.

create a pivot table - then you can group the dates for the month

I was thinking a formula that will go to Sheet1 and count those inmate released between the 1'st and the end of each month or that just will count those that are released in Jan 07, etc.

Thanks...

People please, does anyone has an answer that does not involve pivot tables?

If you have dates in sheet1!B2:B100 then this formula will count how many of those dates are in January 2007

=SUMPRODUCT(--(TEXT(sheet1!B2:B100,"mmm yy")="jan 07"))

or try
=SUMPRODUCT(--(MONTH(Sheet1!AZ2:AZ5757)=6),--(MONTH(Sheet1!AZ2:AZ5757)=2007))
