Counting total number of specifc characters in a cell

Hi.... I'm trying to count the total number of occurances of specific characters with in a cell. For example, I want to know the total number of periods and underscores in "my_name@mycompany.co.uk"

The answer is 3.

Is it possible to do this in a single formula?

In case you have more characters just add them to the array:

=SUM(LEN(A1)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A1,{"_","."},"")))
