I have received an Excel file which was sourced from a file which had "diacritical" marks in their names like "ÖAF, Mégane" - Now the problem is when I open the file in Excel - what I get is for example with Mégane
is "Mtgane". Also in the file where he had blank spaces I am getting on opening the file
a funny a ( Á )

The person who sent me this file eluded to the fact that as I am based in Europe I could be using a differnt Code Page system for Windows. In US apparently the Code Page is 1252 while in Europe it is 850. Only Bill Gates could come up with that kind of genius
system.

Now I don't have a clue about different Code Pages - but short of replacing my windows version - can someone recommend a procedure to open the file with Diacritical marks and for the blank spaces to appear properly ?

Thanks

Will the fill handle fill 1, 2, 3?
Yes! Type 1 in a cell. Hold down Ctrl while you drag the fill handle.
Well, I don't have many answers but a few questions. (EDIT: I should probably read the title as well  )

You might be able to determine the coding (if Windows 2000 and Office XP) by going to Character Map (Program > System Tools) and then checking the coding (usually set to Unicode in Windows 2000); but there are other codings listed in the drop-down box. That may give you a hint to find the character and then do a Find and Replace.

Might not be much help, but worth examining.
