Drop Downs and adding

Heya guys and gals! :)
First off I'd like to explain what I want my excel sheet for.

I'm right now trying to shred the last bits of fat for the summer and thought I'd try a Keto diet, this depends heavily on not eating very many carbs, as well as keeping your total Kcal intake below maintenance.

This makes for a fairly tricky diet, as most things you generally eat contains alot of carbs, so I thought I'd make planning my meals easy, by creating an excel sheet, with drop down menues for different foods/drinks as well as their nutritional content.

I''d like it to look something like this, with the dropdown list under "Food"

I hope you get the idea
Now, I managed to create a drop down list of foods, and managed to get it tho show all the content I'm interested in, but I cant add the totals.

If i pick, 2 foods and a drink from my drop down list it changes the row that is shown, not the value in a specific row/column if you get what I'm trying to say, so I cant use a: =SUM(F1:F3:F5) thingie, cause that just adds the value in those rows in my list, not what i pick in the drop down.

I dont know if I'm making any sense, but I hope I can get some help here. I'm a complete novice when it comes to stuff like this and I've been sitting here all day long without making any progress whatsoever.

Where it says: (inget) or Avokado are drop down menues containing different foods. I want to be able to pick a food or 2 for each meal, from a drop down menue, and then have excel add up the carbs, proteins, fat and energy in each meal (down at totalt)
and I have no idea how to do that.

if I pick say Cashewnuts as the first thing I eat the nutrients are shown in columns B-F, row 12, where as boiled eggs are in columns B-F, but row 103.. see where I'm getting at?

I want the combined nutritional values of each food i select in drop down menues to be added upp down where it says: Totalt.

This is not the finished look, but I need to know how/if I can do this before I bother any more with it.

Okay, some more questions:

You have lots of hidden lines - why? Is this just so you can have lots of ingredients at each meal, and you're hiding them temporarily?

Your sums are only picking up one line from each section. Why can't they add up all the lines from each section? Does this not give you the answer you want?

The hidden lines are a list of different foods, wich can be picked in a Drop down menue, about 100 of them right now, but there will be more eventually.

The only way I know how to make a list is to incorporate the text you want somewhere in the sheet, mark them and click: "Create List"

This then hides the list, and only shows the row you pick in the drop down menu.

I want 2-3 different foods +a drink/meal, and 4-5 meals/day..

I wanna add up the nutrients for each food/drink at every meal, and then add up the meals at the end of the day, giving me the total daily intake of fats, carbs, protein and Kcal.

Adding up all the lines from every section gives me the total of all the nutrients of ALL the food currently in my list, and thats not what I'm after.

Okay. In which case I would suggest:

1) Create a separate sheet, and list all your foods/drinks and their nutritional information on it. Select the range that contains just the names, and in the Name Box (above the column A label) type Food.

2) Get rid of all your hidden rows. Create a dropdown in one of the column A cells by going to Data - Validation - select list and in the source box type =Food. Copy and paste for all the other cells in column A where you want a dropdown.

3) Use VLOOKUP to pull the nutritional information on to your "menu" sheet. (If you don't know how VLOOKUP works, shout.)

You'll then be able to sum the way you want to.

I am just finishing up an excel sheet for a few of my clients (I do personal training/nutritional consultation as a side job). I would just throw out what I did but I think it would take you more time to modify mine than to start from scratch with yours (mine is for a very specific diet where only about 15-20 foods are allowed). Where I think this might help is how I did mine. I set up a seperate sheet where I listed the allowed foods in three categories...Protein, Carbs, and Fats. Named each of those ranges accordingly and created another table that "makes a meal" where you can pick up to three proteins, three carbs, and three fats (drop downs made from lists just mentioned). I have specific serving sizes mentioned with each dropdown...for example, next to the available selections for fats I have a cell containing servings and a cell containing grams...each fat serving equals 5 grams of fat in my case so you pick your food (6 almonds from the dropdown for example) and # of servings and it calculates the number of cals...so on and so forth. I then have a few macros written that will take this information and put it in a template like you have created at any meal (1-7), bringing over calories/grams/servings and the food you chose for each drop down...I know I have rambled a bunch but if this sounds like something you are trying to create, let me know and i will get a little more specific with how it looks.

I was too busy rambling in my post to notice what the previous person posted...but it is similar to that concept...only difference being that by adding in the "servings" calculation, I was able to better track exactly what I was eating.

Thanx, I fiddled a little bit with VLOOKUP and separate sheets with lists and stuff, but since I dont know how that works I never got anywhere, I dont know how anything works really :P
Never used excel before today ^^

When someone say "set up another sheet" It takes me 15 mins just to figure out how ;)


This is the basic look of the thing, more or less. I will also add recipes for some kinds of food somewhere, either in a pop up, or a separate column or something.
Anyways, where it says: Food1, Food2 etc.. you should have drop down menues, and I want the proteins etc added up, this is where I run into trouble.

If anyone feels like giving me a sample code, or a tutorial like you would explain it to a kid I would be ever grateful! I'm totally retarded when it comes to stuff like this, its like an alien language to me :P

Before I throw some examples out there, Are you going to define a specific serving size for each food...this way instead of having it say "chicken"...it says "4 oz Chicken"? I find it much more versatile when you can pick serving sizes and have it automatically adjust the calories accordingly.
