# Embedded Numbers

Hi, I have the following problem in Excel. Need help from you guys.

Say the first row number is 12,345
the second row number is 10,900; and
the third row number is 1,445 (which is first number minus the second number)

Is there any way I can find these kinds of relationships -- when there are hundreds of numbers like in an accounting ledger?

### Excel Facts

What is =ROMAN(40) in Excel?
The Roman numeral for 40 is XL. Bill "MrExcel" Jelen's 40th book was called MrExcel XL.
Is the third row just 1,445 or does it contain a formula like =A1-A2 ?

If it contains a formula then you can use the Trace Precedents... tool. What version of Excel do you use?

EDIT - You cannot post a link to a pic that is on your hard drive. But here is how to host & post a pic...

Thanks Greg,

No the third row does not have a formula, its just a number from ledger. My job is to find out if ledger and other systems match

Accountants at times just enter the net number

Btw, I didn't post any link. It came automatically.

So, for example: A1 = 1000, A2 = 800 and A3 = 200. You’re wanting A4 to be what?
• A name of the operation like subtraction? Or
• The formula that would go into A3, i.e. =A1-A2 ?
• Next week’s winning powerball numbers? (ok, we’re still working on that one)

You got me wrong. Okay let me clarify. Btw, I am using Excel 2003.

A1 = 1,000
A2 = 800
A3 = 200

Just want to know, if this A3 is equal to net of A1 or A2. Suppose, A3 is 300, running the same formula, function, I'd know its nothing to do with A1 and A2.

Thanks bud
