I'm sure that in previous version of excel you could format a cell as a percentage and then enter a number and it would show as that value %.

For example, format the cell to % with 2 decimal place, enter the number 5 in the cell and it would display as 5.00%.

I am unable to get this to work now and wondered if there is a way to do this with adding the trailing % symbol?

How to change case of text in Excel?
Use =UPPER() for upper case, =LOWER() for lower case, and =PROPER() for proper case. PROPER won't capitalize second c in Mccartney
Works fine for me in Excel365
What version of Excel are you using?
What result are you getting when you enter the number 5?

I'm on a 365 subscription.

When the cell is formatted as a percentage, when I enter the number 5 it shows 500%.

Ok that is different to it not showing the %.
In options > advanced > editing > turn on Enable automatic percent entry
