Evaluating text string as math

I have two columns of text cells with values such as A1="1+1" and B1="1+2". I want to calculate =B1-A1 and get 1 as a result. Can this be done without using VBA?

Select a column containing text numbers. Press Alt+D E F to quickly convert text to numbers. Faster than "Convert to Number"
Give this formula a try. If there are more than 12 numbers in A1 and B1 (altogether), continue the pattern in curly brackets:

=SUM(1*TRIM(MID(SUBSTITUTE("+-"&SUBSTITUTE(A1,"+","+-")&"+"&B1&REPT("+0",30),"+",REPT(" ",99)),{1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12}*99,99)))
