How about something simple like this:

Book1
A
1Header
21
31
41
52
63
73
84
94
105
Sheet1

Is that something you can use?

What version of Excel are you using?

Ok, based on the sample exhibit in my other reply...

Let's assume the range to format is A2:A10.

There must be a header cell above the data range and the header cell must not contain the same entry as the first cell of the data range. Based on the exhibit...

A1 = header row
A2:A10 = data range to be formatted
A1 does not equal A2

Select the *entire* range A2:A10 starting from cell A2. Cell A2 will be the active cell. The active cell is the one cell in the selected range that is not shaded. The formula will be relative to the active cell.

Goto the menu Format>Conditional Formatting
Select the Formula Is option
Enter this formula in the box on the right:
=MOD(SUMPRODUCT(--(A$1:A1<>A$2:A2)),2)
Click the Format button
Select the Patterns tab
Select the desired fill color
OK out

It's possible but it gets more complicated and more calculation intensive.

How many colors do you want?
