How can I protect my control buttons

Hello

I have three general-purpose questions for you Excel/VBA experts. On all my sheets that have a report that will be printed or viewed, I used the ‘Freeze Panes’ command that is under ‘VIEW’ in 2010 Excel. This means I froze all the column headings so they are always visible if the user scrolls down the sheet. I hate it when the column headings or titles move off the screen. All of my ‘Control buttons’ such as ‘SAVE DATA’ are above this ‘freeze’ line so they don’t disappear either. I need to make sure the user is unable to change either the formula in the report date line or those buttons. It’s important for you to know that these are on Data Entry sheets, so I can’t protect the sheet.

1. Is there any way I can protect those items?

What I’d like to be able to do would be to stop the cursor from moving above that ‘Freeze line’, as there is no reason for the user to be up there with the cursor. That would be ideal, because it would stop them from messing anything up, and would be a partial answer to my first question. I just have to make sure all the buttons remain active if clicked on.

2. Is there any way I can ‘block’ the cursor from being scrolled above that ‘freeze’ line?

3. Is it possible to disable the right mouse button so the user can’t get into the control buttons?

I don’t know if this will make any difference, but the programs will be used with Excel 2007. THANK YOU for any help or suggestions you may be able to offer.

Yes you can protect those sheets.

If a cell is Locked then protection will effect that cell. If it is not Locked, the user can still enter data if the sheet is protected.

In the Format Cell dialog, look at the Protection tab.

I want to apologize for taking so long to get back to you, but a family illness has kept me busy other places. I can’t THANK YOU enough for your prompt, clear and concise answers. That was exactly what I needed, and everything works like a charm now. From my questions, I’m sure you can tell I’m fairly new to Excel and VBA. I’d love to master these two, but there is so much, I don’t think I’ll ever learn it all. I’ve spent a considerable amount of time reading and studying the questions other people have asked and the replies they have received, and from that, I’ve learned a lot. You and your fellow MrExcel experts have no idea how much you have helped me, and I’m sure others like me. This place has been a gold mine of information. Keep up the good work. It is very much appreciated.

Thanks for getting back to the thread.

Welcome to the forum and to Excel.

Since you are new to both Excel and VBA, I would recommend that you learn native Excel well before starting on VBA.
Its surprising how much Excel can do without macros.

Thanks for the welcome. As I said, this is a fantastic place with wonderful people like yourself.

When I said I was new to Excel and VBA, while that is pretty much true, I’m not a complete rank beginner. For quite some time, at work I’ve used an old DOS spreadsheet, called Symphony, a Lotus 1-2-3 spinoff. I’ve also had some training years ago in some of the older DOS Basic languages. I understand how spreadsheets work; it’s just that the terminology has changed so much. Terms like ‘Objects’ and ‘Properties’ etc., I’d never heard of before, and still haven’t completely figured out what they mean. I’ve had a big programming project dumped in my lap, so I’m forced to upgrade to Excel. This should have been done long ago, but everything worked OK, so like that old saying goes, ‘Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke’.

I started out trying to keep it to Excel as much as possible, and then I ran into ‘Circular reference’ errors. Nobody here could figure out any way to avoid them with what I needed to do, without going to VBA. Also, the owners aren’t as fluent with computers as they could be, so I’m trying to automate things as much as possible.

I’ll admit it’s been quite a struggle, but I’ve been working on this for a while, and unless something unexpected pops up, I think I’m on the final leg now. What I have left to do, shouldn’t be too hard, as I’m finding bits and pieces of previously written code can be adapted and used again.
