how to count first number in 5 digits in a column

How to count employee number that starts with 1 in a column. I have 5 digits employee number in column a1:a100

If emp numbers are text...

=COUNTIF(Range,"1*")

Otherwise:

=SUMPRODUCT((LEFT(Range)+0=1)+0)

If they are all 5 digit #s, this should work...

=SUMPRODUCT((A1:A100>=10000)*(A1:A100<20000))
