How to prevent older versions from automatically converting tabs to spaces?

My colleagues who used Excel 2013/2016 told me that, after they pasted text into a cell, tabs in the text got converted to spaces automatically. My Excel 2019 does not have such an issue.

Is it possible to prevent the said automatic conversion from happening?
 

Excel Facts

What does custom number format of ;;; mean?
Three semi-colons will hide the value in the cell. Although most people use white font instead.
