Hyperlink address keeps changing

I created some hyperlinks to other files on a shared drive. When I email the workbook with the hyperlinks or copy it to another location the hyperlinks address changes to something like:-

. . /file.xls

instead of:-

S:Folder1\Folder2\file.xls

Why is it substituting part of the address with two periods and how can it be corrected?

Excel Facts

Lock one reference in a formula
Need 1 part of a formula to always point to the same range? use $ signs: $V$2:$Z$99 will always point to V2:Z99, even after copying
One way would be to use the =HYPERLINK() function...

store the root, such as "S:folder1\Folder2\" in any cell,
then have "file.xls" in another cell,

And your link cell would be =HYPERLINK(A1&A2)

That way the Excel hyperlinking and relative addresses won't be so "helpful" when you move it around. It's totally reliant on the actual data in the sheet.

If you don't mind typing the whole address over and over, you could also try using =HYPERLINK("S:folder1\Folder2\file.xls") and see if it changes when it gets moved...

I don't really like that solution. It seems like there should be a way to freeze the address so it doesn't do that. If there isn't a way then I will use an on open event to write the address.
