I am new to excel would like to know how to identify peaks and troughs in a column in excel sheet. Able to identify peaks and troughs if they are far apart but if continous values are peak or trough in a sequence it does not identify the peaks and troughs.

I've made one change to the formule in column E (highlighted red).
Otherwise it seems to work just fine for mw.

Column A: =your source data
Column B: =if(A2>A1,"grow",if(A2=A1,"steady","decline"))
Column C: =if(B2="steady",C1,B2)
Column D: =if(C2=C3,"",if(C2="grow","high","low"))
Column E: =if(b3="steady",E3,D2)
Since this formula is getting written by an automation tool, require it to be in one formula

Excel Facts

What do {} around a formula in the formula bar mean?
{Formula} means the formula was entered using Ctrl+Shift+Enter signifying an old-style array formula.
Since this formula is getting written by an automation tool, require it to be in one formula
There's nothing stopping you from adding multiple columns in an automation tool.

Otherwise, you can always calculate using four columns, and remove the three columns you do not need once all calculations have been finished and the results have been saved as values.

it looks like you pasted the formulas in row 1 and copied down? The formulas should start in row 2, i assumed there’d be headers i row 1.

I am really sorry, but it works on my computer with the data you provided as an example from reply 14.

Even on your last example, the figures match what is expected, except that the results are all one row too high.
So, once again, I can only come to the conclusion that you did not paste the formulas in row 2 and copied them down from there.

Here the numbers in column A, 6000,8000 and 9000 are out of series in the column so those need to be marked out from the rest, that is what i am looking at.
