I have found that when I set up a spreadsheet I usually start with smaller cells and merge them when required. Its helps with a better layout. I have also heard that it is not good to utilize mathematical functions or formulas in merged cells. Does this create issues?

Excel Facts

Add Bullets to Range
Select range. Press Ctrl+1. On Number tab, choose Custom. Type Alt+7 then space then @ sign (using 7 on numeric keypad)
Merged cells almost always create problems for Excel. It is best to avoid them if at all possible.

Merged cells are notoriously problematic, especially with things like sorting and VBA, and I would highly recommend avoid using them.
If you are just merging across columns within rows, there is an alternative that gives you the same visual effect, without all the issues.
