I want to have two print areas (C11:D33 & G11:I33) print on one sheet of paper. Excel seems to want to put each print selection area onto a separate page. Is this standard behavior? I can't figure out how to do it.

Please see below.

Using a mouse in Excel is the work equivalent of wearing a lanyard when you first get to college
There is not a simple way of doing this other than using sheet 2.
Put in cell A1 =C11 then copy the formula all the way to cell B33
Then in Column C1 Enter =G11 all the way to D33

That is the way i would do it. And then just print that page.
