HI,

I'm trying to teach a non excel user how to use pivot tables. That part is ok.

However, one of his goals in using pivot tables is analysing data as it changes from quarter to quarter. I'm in insurance. He's got a list of claims, with claim ID #, and Status (Open/Closed) and evaluation date:

Eval Date Claim# Status
9/30/2004 1001 Open
9/30/2004 1002 Open
9/30/2004 1003 Closed
12/31/2004 1001 Closed
12/31/2004 1002 Open
12/31/2004 1003 Reopened

He wants to run a pivot table by claim number to see which claims have changed status. The goal in this exercise is that he doesn't constantly come back to me to do his reports. I want to give him a flat file of data and teach him how to manipulate it himelf.

Most other things I've taught him. I can't figure out how to teach him this. I am hoping to use pivot tables, since I used them for my other lessons.

Excel Facts

Create a Pivot Table on a Map
If your data has zip codes, postal codes, or city names, select the data and use Insert, 3D Map. (Found to right of chart icons).
Claim# to ROW fields
Status to COLUMN fields
Eval date to ROW fields between Claim# and DATA field
Eval date ALSO into DATA area

Right click on value 'Open' and Order / 'move left' to get a better looking report.

This gives a logical progression of Open / Closed / Reopened
