Numeric data in new cells defaults wrongly to Time rather than General in existing XL 2010 Workbooks

When I go to add content to blank cells in existing workbooks the numeric content automatically defaults to a time format. This does not appear to be the case for new workbooks. Is there any way of clearing blank cells of this problem so that this does not recur and by default the General format is used?

E.g. entering 9 displays as 00:00:00

A few months back our office moved from XL 2003 to 2010 whether it's relevant or not. Sometimes the new data is pasted in and other times it is typed in. Any help will be appreciated as it affects thousands of cells.
