Personal Macro Workbook does not open

Morning All

I have just tried to run a macro from my Personal Macro Workbook only to find it had not opened.

A little investigation showed that it is still available in the correct directory, but it only opens if I open Excel as a separate stage: if I directly open an existing workbook, then PERSONAL does not open. Or it may be opening and then shutting immediately: the error message I get if I try to record a macro in an existing workbook (opened from explorer) is 'Personal Macro Workbook in the startup folder must stay open for recording.

I thought it might be a glitch in one particular workbook, but have found the same with a range which have opened in tandem with PERSONAL as recently as the end of last week.
I thought it might be a stray line in a new macro, but the same happens if I replace PERSONAL with an old version.
I checked Macro settings in Trust Centre settings and they are still 'disable macros with notification', which is my normal default.

Any ideas what is going on and how to fix it?

The whole of PERSONAL will not open if I open an existing (even macro-free) workbook directly. The same applies if PERSONAL is empty or contains only a single recorded macro to put "abcde" in A1: the content is irrelevant, so there is no code - I'm not getting far enough to run/view/edit/record it.

Apologies if from my phrasing you thought I meant a particular macro in it wouldn't open.
