Pivot formating frustration

I am trying to format a simple pivot table. In my data I have a column of UPC numbers. In the source file, the UPCs are in number format with no decimals. When the pivot table runs, they are converted to general format - giving me a scientific like number (ie. 7.125654xE11) rather than a simple 12 digit number.
I make sure that my numbers are formatted correctly before I run the pivot. I have tried to format the numbers in the pivot table, but whenever I change views, it reverts to the scientific format. I have gone to Table options and tried unchecking "Auto Format" and checked "Preserve Formatting". I can't seem to find the trick to it. THis problem goes the same when I try to highlight or center columns. Any insights?

How do you format your numbers in the PT?
I tried right-clicking the PT - Field settings - numbers -then formatting as needed, and this seems to do the job.
