production cost spreadsheet

I'm working on a spreadsheet to calculate production costs for jewelry design. I have 3 sheets corresponding to different components of a finished piece (e.g., chains, findings, charms), with basic math formulas diving the total cost by the total units to calculate the price per unit.

There are also sheets corresponding to the type of finished product (e.g., necklaces, bracelets, earrings etc.) On this sheet I am listing the components for each piece of jewelry to calculate the production cost.

My goal is to be able to type in text for the component (e.g., "crinkle chain") and have it linked to the cell that contains its price per unit.

Is there a way to display text that links up to a numerical value on a different sheet and then perform basic math functions from the text cell?

Can you AutoAverage in Excel?
There is a drop-down next to the AutoSum symbol. Open the drop-down to choose AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX, or MIN
You could tackle this two ways... you could use a VLOOKUP formula that would pull over the numbers, but the text would have to be a perfect match. Or, you could build a list via "Data/Validation/Settings/Allow:/List" with the VLOOKUP formula next to the selection box. Hope this is start...
