Range: Maximum - Minimum Value

Does anyone know how to set excel to identify a sample of values and work out the Maximum value from the minimum value.
eg:
2
4
6
8
10
=8

=MAX(A1:A10)-MIN(A1:A10)

where A1:A10 houses the values of interest.
