Remove spaces without a formula?

I have a worksheet that is totally generated with formulas and would like to remove and shift up any cell that does not contain a value. I have tried copying and pasting special values, but my data is left with extra spaces that disable my conditional formatting. Is there a way to remove spaces before and after a cell value without using a formula to accomplish it? I have already tried text to columns.

Did you know Excel offers Filter by Selection?
Add the AutoFilter icon to the Quick Access Toolbar. Select a cell containing Apple, click AutoFilter, and you will get all rows with Apple
As far as I know, you either use a formula or you use a macro. If you use find/replace, it might replace even spaces you intend to keep, except of course all your cells contain only one word in which case the Find and replace would come in handy, but its very unlikely that this is the case
