Removing Subtotal Data, but margin still showing [+]

I have a sheet when at one point in time I had used the sub-total function.

This added the level tree in the left margin (like the attached)

I've subsequently deleted that data, but the margin has remained, and if I add a new sub-total this doesn't reset it.

Is it possible to restore this to normal so I can start again with less data?

In Excel 2003: go to menu Data/Group And Outline/Clear Outline
Not sure where you can find this in 2007 or higher...

Data, Ungroup, Clear Outline
