Solution I use for this is a text box with no fill or borders. Hold down ALT while sizing the box to snap to the grid. You could put a text box over several rows and format it with one of the vertical alignments.
This is not as limiting as it seems: you can make text box contents dynamic. For this, make a cell somewhere that contains whatever content you want to appear in the text box (result of INDEX, CONCATENATE, TEXT, etc). Select the tet box - click directly on the border so it is solid grey. Then click in the formula bar and type the address of your cell (ie =$A$1) and hit Enter. Then format.
