Should be an easy COUNTIF question

I have a data query that imports a member ID (column A) and their Join Date (column B) into a Sheet (call it Sheet2). On Sheet1 I'd like the user to be able to enter a start date (cell B1) and end date (cell B2). I'd like to report the number of Members who joined between those two dates.

So I figured I could use COUNTIF. But when I reference a cell within the criteria 'area' of the formula it does not work. When I manually type in a date within the criteria 'area' of the formula it DOES work.

ex...
sheet1 b1 = 10/1/2006
=countif(sheet2!b:b, ">sheet1!b1")
returns nothing

=countif(sheet2!b:b, ">10/1/2006")
returns the correct number

Any help is appreciated.

Whats the difference between CONCAT and CONCATENATE?
The newer CONCAT function can reference a range of cells. =CONCATENATE(A1,A2,A3,A4,A5) becomes =CONCAT(A1:A5)

Try:

=countif(sheet2!b:b, ">"&sheet1!b1)
