Show HTML Formatting in Excel

I exported to xls from a web app a listing of text fields with Rich Text Formating. When I moved it to excel, I can see some of the formatting is there in the cell (new paragraph spaces) but I cannot see any of the tags. Is there anyway to retrieve these HTML tags in the excel field or are they gone forever if I do not explicitly tell the app to save the HTML Tags?
