sumif with dates

I have a date someone donated and the amount the donated. I'd like to sum up how much was donated each month.

found this and it works!
" =SUMIFS($b$1:$b$5,$A$1:$A$5,">"&c3,$A$1:$A$5,"<="&c4)

where b1:b5 is sum range,
a1:a5 is criteria range dates
c1 & c2 hurdle dates "
