Updating format of many cells

Hi!

I export a list from an application to Excel format.
Open the file in Excel, a column with dates are handled as text.
I select the cells and change format to 'Date'
Nothing happens.
I have to select a cell, press F2 and Enter and the format changes to Date.
Recognise this?
Is there a way to make a "mass update" to avoid this F2 +ENTER procedure for every cell?
I use Excel 2003.

You can use Data|Text to Columns, specifying the date format at Step 3.
