Using variables in Shell function

I am trying to invoke a shell function with three challenges -

the path to the executable (vlc portable) is variable as it runs from a usb drive causing the drive letter to change;

the file names passed to the executable (audio and video media files) are stored in a cell that has a variable row and fixed column, and is not in the same folder as the executable

and the file names passed to the executable contain spaces.

Any suggestions on one or all of the above?
