What actually triggers PowerPivot automatic refresh?

My powerpivot workbook seems to be automatically refreshing more often than I believe it should. I understand it will do this when I hit the 'Update All' button or when I create a new Calculated Field. I even have the add-in to disable auto refresh when I am adding new calculated fields to the data model.

What I am looking for is a complete list of triggers that causes the automatic refresh?

Should my model do an automatic refresh when I go to 'Manage Data Model'? Should I expect my model to do an automatic refresh when I hit the save button?

These are two examples of what I am experiencing lately which are really slowing me down.

Thanks,

Chris
