Wordpad imbedded issue in Excel

I have an issue in Excel 2010 in which older imbedded Wordpad objects display themselves as 'Wordpad Document', but when clicked, the Picture Tools
menu appears. Right clicking displays the following choices (Cut, Copy, Paste Options, Edit Picture, Change Picture, Group, Bring to Front, Send to Back,
Hyperlink, Assign Macro, Size and Properties, Format Picture).

This does not happen with newer imbedded WordPad objects. When double-clicked they open as usual.

In the image below, the imbedded wordpad on the left opens PictureTools, the one on the right opens normally.

I would like very much to restore the older Wordpads but not sure how to find the file to investigate corruption or what solution is best.

Excel Facts

What does custom number format of ;;; mean?
Three semi-colons will hide the value in the cell. Although most people use white font instead.
Update: It seems possible that the older embedded Wordpads were somehow converted <WordPad Document Object <Convert>>.

There seems to be an additional problem: when text is pasted into the Wordpad embedded object via Outlook the cursors spins forever until
Task Manager is used to kill the WordPad task. When the Outlook text is pasted into a text editor and then WordPad, no problem.
