Excel 2016 VBA - Compare 2 PivotTables fields for matching values

Hi please can someone help, Excel 2016 VBA PivotTable objects. I rarely develop in Excel VBA (as I'm a SQL Dev).

Overall Goal:
Compare a single column [P_ID] value list from PivotTable2 against PivotTable1 filter field, if they exist or not to enable filtering on those valid values in PivotTable1. Needs to compare against the entire list of [P_ID] in PivotTable1.

I have some Excel 2016 VBA code which I have adapted from a previous answer from a different internet source.

Logic is:
Gather data from PivotTable2 from the ComparisonTable dataset (all from a PowerPivot model), field [P_ID] list of values. Generate a test line as input into function to test for existence of field and value in PivotTable1 against the Mastertable dataset, if true add the line as valid if not skip the line. Finally filter PivotTable1 with the VALID P_ID values.


It works to a point until it gets to the bFieldItemExists function which generates an error:

Run-time error '1004' Unable to get the PivotItems property of the PivotField class
Can someone please correct the way of this not working?

Welcome to the forum.

You need On Error Resume Next before that line, or the code will simply stop with an error if the item doesn't exist.

Hi, thanks for the welcome and reply!

The issue is that code line in the function just doesn't work at all... irrespective of the values being passed to it.

I've fiddled with that code line over days now, still can't get it to work, its like it doesn't like the object being passed.

It works, if I completely miss out the function call, but then invalid values which if they don't exist get passed, which causes the destination
pivot filter to completely crash out.

If you try:

It's neither!

As soon as the line is hit when stepping into code, a Microsoft Visual Basic dialog box pops up with

"Run-time error 1004: Unable to get the PivotItems property of the PivotField Class"

I'm at a loss... its like it doesn't like the object being passed.

Function to compare [P_ID] values returned in PivotTable2 against values in PivotTable1 if they exist, true or false, to then build up a Valid filter array, to apply to PivotTable1.

If I replace the line in the function with this line, I get:

"Run-time error 1004: Unable to get the PivotItems property of the PivotField Class"

Is your field in the report filter area?

In that case, you'd need to set the currentpage to the value in question, and then test for an error there.
