Can you update links without opening the source file?

Did you know Excel offers Filter by Selection?
Add the AutoFilter icon to the Quick Access Toolbar. Select a cell containing Apple, click AutoFilter, and you will get all rows with Apple
Sort by date Sort by votes
In short, yes you can, it just takes longer to do.
Open a file with links, say yes to update and see what I mean, then compare the same process when you have the source file open. Depending on the number of links, it's many many times faster.
