Changing text via formula

This may be a basic question, but I can't find the answer anyway.

I'd like to use a formula to automatically change text pasted into a spreadsheet. For example, if the value "James Jones" is pasted, I'd like the cell to automatically convert to "JJ" or "Jim".

I was trying this: =IF(A1="James Jones","Jim","")

But it was not working. Any ideas?

Ideally, I'd love to be able to create several statements within one cell, so that if the name was "Sandra Smith", "Sandy" would show up as well.

Thank you!
