copy/paste related question when filter is on

Hi there,
I am having hard time understanding, how does excel work when i do copy paste some data into a table that has its filters on (meaning, few rows are hidden due to filters on header).

Here is what i did when felt like its not working consistently & have experimented & results confused me further:

1. I tried to convert my table to a range
2. then turning on filters &
3. then copy pasted only small pieces of info while filters still on and it worked well by pasting the info into just the rows visible and not into hidden rows (due to filter)
4. Now turned all info into table (using ctrl+T)
5. Repeated steps 2, 3, it worked well
6. Now when tried doing steps 2 & 3 on different/another table, and it did not. Excel was filling in my pasted values into all the hidden rows

So, how to make excel paste in just the visible cells (current task on my hand), and switch to make it paste in all the hidden cells? any clarification is greatly appreciated!
