Could Not use "|"; file already in Use

The title is the error. I get this from an Excel sheet that has a querytable to an Access database. There are multiple other workbooks in use which write to this same database, but none keep it open for more than a second. There are effectively no security features or restrictions on the database folder. If you can access the spreadsheet, you can access the database.

Ideas?
