Count Uniques and Transpose for Summarization

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and a novice at Excel, but dropped into a position where I need to come up to speed quickly. I think MrExcel will be part of my "OJT".

In the meantime, I need some idea/formulas or code to help with this application.

There is a large worksheet which contains multiple text values in multiple columns. But for some simplified reporting, I need to be able to sum (count) by attributes of one column and report by second column. See example below. The challenge is these columns change values weekly so the formulas need to be dynamic in terms of scanning the column, generating the list of unique items of each and formatting and summing as listed in Desired Outcome. So for instance, next week a new Item "Pants" my be added and a new Saleperson "MacIntosh" might be added, so the report needs to be dynamic and scan the columns, therefore "hardcoded" formulas to date are very ineffective.

Have you considered running a pivot table. It would yield directly the results you want.

Vog and Aladin,

Thanks for the quick response.

Aladin - I haven't found a way for Pivot table to Count the values. In the example I need the formula to count "Coats", there is no column next to Coats with a value (1), etc. Seems Pivot will work if I had a value.

VoG - In the spreadsheet, I can not code the Salespersons name or the Item names. Next week Coats my be off the list, or Vog may be added to Salesperson. The report needs to scan the columns, build dynamic Column and Row headings and count the number of Items by Salesperson. Make sense?

Thanks for the quick response.

Aladin - I haven't found a way for Pivot table to Count the values. In the example I need the formula to count "Coats", there is no column next to Coats with a value (1), etc. Seems Pivot will work if I had a value.

VoG - In the spreadsheet, I can not code the Salespersons name or the Item names. Next week Coats my be off the list, or Vog may be added to Salesperson. The report needs to scan the columns, build dynamic Column and Row headings and count the number of Items by Salesperson. Make sense?

Thanks for your idea. I dropped it in and it worked. VoG also suggested a Pivot table, so between the two of these I should be set.

If you are on Excel 2007 or later, convert the data area into a Table.
After any change to the Table, hit Refresh.

Thanks for the suggestion. I used another idea for the main (dynamic) report I was building and was able to use your idea for a static, metrics report I needed to create. It works great. I didn't realize how powerful the =sumproduct() function is. I haven't figured out what the -- is for? Appreciate the knowledge sharing.
