Downloaded data table has text with leading hyphens--causing #NAME? error

I have a data set -- a csv download -- in which a sprinkling of text items have leading hyphens. These items all are input with an error. I tried various ways of pulling the data out (=mid, etc) but the extracted text is the #NAME?, not the characters in the field. Any ideas on how to extract or convert or otherwise get these items to become useful -- without having to manually change them?

Test for Multiple Conditions in IF?
Use AND(test, test, test, test) or OR(test, test, test, ...) as the logical_test argument of IF.
Can you provide an example of your table? If 2 dimensional provide rows and columns, what it looks like before and what it looks like after?
