entering date in excel

Hi
My computer date setting is DD-MM-YYYY. So if I enter a date like 13-12-2001, excel will accept that. If I enter date like 1-13-2010 excel will not accept that. So far so good. But why when I enter

may 3, 2001

excel will accept that? and why when I type

3 may, 2001

excel will not accept that?

Ask Microsoft about any inconsistencies - they wrote the rules
incidentally may 3, 2001 does NOT convert to a date on Excel 2016 with UK regional settings
