here's a curly one that someone may have come across before
We're using W2k server and have an Access 2000 app that individually opens a number of excel spreadsheets read only, extracts some data and closes the file. Trouble is it seems to spasmodically remove the security settings from a spreadsheet which means we can't copy, delete or do anything with it. The only way to fix is a server reboot.
any ideas ?
thanks
Tony

Excel Facts

Format cells as date
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+3 to format cells as date. (Shift 3 is the # sign which sort of looks like a small calendar).

Re: excel files opened in Access R/O losing security setting

What do you mean rebooting the server 'fixes' a security problem in a spreadsheet?

I have a hunch about a common problem working with Excel from Access.

When you attempt to open Excel, does it seem to 'lock up'?
When you look at the process list in Task Manager, are there multiple entries for Excel (and you have none or fewer running)?

If yes, it's possible you're not closing the application object completely (at all) when closing excel. There's a trick to it - you have to set the application.usercontrol property to true before the Close method.

Here is the first post where I learned of this 'fix' myself.
