i am a well seasoned equity trader, but i am new to excel. i crossed over to excel because i prefer viewing equity data in spreadsheet format and i also wanted to be able to customize queries.

i recently purchased excel 365 and have experienced cell statements like busy, calc, many green circles in the upper corner of the cell. also, i believe msft is throttling the app, which is what i think is happening when they show me those statements mentioned. when this happens i wait 45 mins and get no change, then i close the app reopen it and 80% of those statements are gone....all i really want is access to end of day equity data to calculate on my pc.

also, excluding weekends and holidays for data calculating is a hassle. ***i assume this issue will be in an older version of excel also?

curious if an older version of excel that does not need to connect with msft's back end servers and an alternative end of day equity data would be a better fit?

if so what older version of excel would offer this? also, any recommendations for an alternative equity data provider? can excel access outside data well and easily? outside meaning other than STOCKHISTORY so it would be either located on my hard drive or from an api? i am not looking to scrape data.

Excel Facts

Show numbers in thousands?
Use a custom number format of #,##0,K. Each comma after the final 0 will divide the displayed number by another thousand
i forgot to mention my spreadsheet is approximately 1000 rows and 20 columns.

Microsoft does not throttle 365 (unless you are doing something that involves pulling data from their servers).

thank you for the info. for my situation when i mentioned throttle i was only thinking it does this when stockhistory data is being asked. may i ask other than stockhistory what are other common queries that require msft server access from the program?

Python in newer versions. Possibly anything that uses Bing Maps.

Thank you. May I ask what was the last version of Excel that would let me access stock data on my hard drive and does not require MSFT server's to be involved for anything? Maybe I should say the end user does not need internet access to make use of everything that Excel version has to offer.

How are you accessing stock data?

If I go that route I would be accessing stock data on my hard drive probably in csv format.

Then any version of Excel will do that. Later versions are probably better as they have Power Query built-in.

Thank you. May I ask is there a way to pause STOCKHISTORY or Excel 365 in general from continuously from updating price data? Since I really only need end of day data once a day, after the first refresh I am good. I ask because the program tries to update often throughout the day and the program sometimes hangs. Meaning it goes white as if between the data pull, updating calculations, saving to the cloud resources become strained (not sure).
