Get initial from name

How can I get just the initial of the name (ie in example below I want just L, C, R etc)

Smith L
Jones C
Goodman R

How to find 2nd largest value in a column?
MAX finds the largest value. =LARGE(A:A,2) will find the second largest. =SMALL(A:A,3) will find the third smallest
Sort by date Sort by votes
If it is always the last character, than just something like:
=RIGHT(A1,1)

If there are other possibilities/conditions, please list them all here.

=RIGHT(A1, 1)

as a formula gives you the last letter of cell A1.
