Gremlins! VBA?

Dear super-clever folks - please help!`

I have a spreadsheet for recording and analysing accident data - it contains several sheets, drop-down look-ups from named ranges, tables, pivots...but no macros.
Said sheet keeps developing odd little habits and I am at a loss as to what is going on!
Some of the intermittent problems:
  • When saved, the file saves a copy of itself beginning with '~$'
  • When opened, dialog box saying 'This workbook already contains data, are you sure you want to overwrite it?'
  • A colleague is inputting information, saving the file, then when he re-opens the data isn't there
And as of today, when I single click on the file in explorer....it launches VBA!

I've changed the book from xlsm to plain old xls. It warned me that certain elements (VBA Projects) couldn't be saved in this format - but there are no VBA projects.

I'd appreciate any ideas on what's causing my gremlins - I'm going spare!

Excel Facts

Formula for Yesterday
Name Manager, New Name. Yesterday =TODAY()-1. OK. Then, use =YESTERDAY in any cell. Tomorrow could be =TODAY()+1.
Are you sure there's no code in the workbook?

Have you looked in all the modules including ThisWorkbook, Sheet1, Shee2 etc?

Are there any add-ins installed?

Do you have antivirus software ?

It definitely sounds like there is code involved in the workbook !

Where did the file originate? I'm wondering why it was a *.xlsm file if there is no vba in it?

Instead of saving it as *.xls save it as *.xlsx and agree to any warnings about vba Projects not being able to be saved in such files.
Then close and open the file several times and see if the behaviour that you reported still occurs.
Also get your colleague to open the new *.xlsx file, input data save and close. Then reopen and see if the new data is there.
